Mindy Kaling made an interesting outfit change when she presented Best Original Score with John Cho at the March 12 ceremony at Los Angeles' Dolby Theatre. The Office alum graced the stage in a daring black dress that looked identical to the white-hot custom Vera Wang gown she wore on the red carpet. (See all of the fabulous arrivals here.)
Both designs featured a plunging neckline with a bustier-like top, a cutout corset bodice and a slick-straight bottom half that included pointed collars at the hips. As if that weren't eye-catching enough, Mindy's gown also consisted of detached bell sleeves.
The Velma actress completed both of her looks with statement diamond earrings and slick-backed hair.
And while Mindy decided to swap out her attire with a different version of her Vera Wang getup, E! correspondent Zanna Roberts Rassi teased the creation beforehand, sharing on Live From E!: Oscars that Mindy's gown was designed in both black and white, but she requested the latter shade for the step and repeat.
A day following the event, Mindy shared more insight into why she chose to wear both Vera Wang looks for the Oscars.
"Last night was a fashion dream for me," the actress began her March 13 Instagram. "I was so honored to wear @verawanggang, an icon and an inspiration to so many people, particularly Asian Americans."
Mindy asked the designer why she made a black and white version, noting that Vera told her, "They embody 'her fascination with the duality of both...it's the eternal attraction of opposites! It also conveys the modernity and sophistication and purity of both colors!'"
"See," Mindy continued, "She is the joyful artist of my dreams!"
The Ocean's 8 star also revealed that she's the type of person who will buy a dress in every color if she loves it, so it made perfect sense to opt for both designs.
"Also," Mindy added, "who knows if I am ever getting married, I am wearing as many Vera Wang gowns as I can!"
It's safe to say that two dresses are always better than one. But of course, The Mindy Project actress wasn't the only celeb to wear a swoon-worthy ensemble on the red carpet.
